In this day and age while everyone is handling major difficulties and life situations, important things like health and mental well-being get put on the back burner. This causes stress, ugly attitudes, wrinkles and weight gain. Sherry V. has found an innovative way to shake some of the stress and pounds away in a fun and high energy cardio dance workout class.

 

Music and dancing is a known stress reduction and cardiovascular training is the traditional way to burn calories and lose weight. Sherry decided to enhance her dance classes by adding an extra cardio bump and by gearing it into more of a workout class. She teaches Bhangra for the first part of class. This is a very high energy dance that originates from the Punjab region of Northern India. The music is driven by the dohl beats (a type of bass drum) and motivates even the tired participants to ‘pump it’ even a little bit more! She also incorporates African Fusion and Belly Dance into the 60 minute session.  Sherry has become well known in the Valley for her Bhangra classes. In the past three years, her classes have been featured in the Republic, the East Valley Tribune, the ASU’s paper State Press and most recently in the article “8 ways to reduce stress” in Business Week.com.

 

After the initial blast of cardio with Bhangra dance, she starts the toning section with the cultural dance of the middle east, bellydance. She has professionally performed in the US and the UK since 2004. This section of class helps isolate specific muscles groups in the arms, chest, back, abs and hips. All women love to learn the moves from this sensual dance style.

 

Then after the women in class catch their breath and connect with their internal sensuality, Sherry dives into the full body expression of African Fusion. She originally learned this mishmash of West African and Belly dance moves from her dance troupe director, Heidi Alexander, of the renowned Domba! 20 minutes of dancing to this heart pounding music fully opens the body, stimulates the endorphins and gets everyone breaking into a sweat!

 

Sherry teaches at her office at the Center for True Harmony Wellness & Medicine™ PC in Mesa AZ every Wednesday night from 6.10p – 7.10p and has recently added a Belly Dance Lunch Workout class held Tuesday afternoon from 11-noon. Come join Susan K in this level-one Chi Gong class. This class is for any age and active level (from teens to grandma!). Chi gong (or Qigong) consists of techniques for dealing with human energy flow and when using these techniques one employs the use of the human body's chakras and meridians which are the body's focal points and channels through which it's Qi Energy flows.

Free Arts Day Was a Big Success!

Why do I support Free Arts of Arizona? by Sherry Vangoethem

I have a super busy life, like most of us. I work in some aspect almost everyday. I want more free-time in life, but I choose to take some of that sparse free-time and give it to Free Arts of Arizona. Why? Let me tell you about some of the faces behind Free Arts of Arizona and why they are worth your time.

 

On April 29th, Free Arts of Arizona held their 'Ask Event' at the Doubletree resort in Scottsdale. I was already involved in the organization, already donating time and money, but still felt drawn to go. I walked in and there were swarms of people. I think close to 700. In the front of the room there was an Art Display. Some of the children that Free Arts of Arizona helps allowed some of their artwork to be displayed. There were paintings/drawings done by kids with ages ranging from 8-17 years.

 

In a project inspired by Free Arts Volunteers, children were asked several questions. "What are you afraid of?" "Why are you afraid of it?" "How will you overcome it?". The children were to answer these questions through art. Some of the artwork was stellar, budding artists for sure. Others were just normal kids drawing normal pics.

 

Why did this impact us so much? Because of the children's answers to the questions. Some kids wrote they were afraid of their father, mother, or another abusive adult in their life. Others were afraid of loneliness- actually several wrote this. Some were afraid of dying. The explanations of why they were afraid were heart wrenching. These children have been abused, abandoned, and abused again. They get put into a bureaucratic system of 'help' from the state, that shows little compassion and has little if any room for mentoring and friendship. These kids have suffered. We all know it happens everyday, but to see the words written on a drawing, created by these kids...it humanizes the reality of this situation. Its just so sad. Its heart wrenching. I teared up at most of the art pieces displayed. I was moved.

 

Then we went into the ballroom, all 700 of us. We sat with our attention glued to the presenters - volunteers that have had their lives changed through the interaction with these troubled kids, kids who have had their lives changed by Free Arts of Arizona programs. There were 3 particular kids who made us all cry. They spoke of their troubles through poems and told us how they finally see light at the end of the tunnel. They finally see that life doesn't have to be distraught and evil. That life can be good. There are people that are good.

 

I donated more money to them, and am signing up to be an instructor for one of the kids programs. We are holding a Free Arts Day here at True Harmony to let other people know about this organization. The amazing thing about this organization is... they are changing the world by doing the simplest art projects with kids. These kids change the way they act, they see that life is full of light. That life can be good. And so they start acting in better ways, making better choices. Instead of perpetuating the cycles of abuse and crime that run rampant in the neglected parts of our society.

 

Change the world. Help by donating a small amount of time, a small amount of money, or a small amount of art supplies. Pay it forward. Put a smile on a child's face. Come to our Free Arts Day on May 30th to learn about Free Arts of Arizona and give back in a small but impactful way!

True Harmony Receives Compliments from Big Organization!

We were honored to play a big part in this year’s ESM Trade Show. ESM is an organization that represents over 2000 employees in the Greater Phoenix Area. Along with speakers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and Sea World, Tiffany Kuehn, our Yoga Instructor and Massage Therapist spoke to the masses about Stress and Losing Weight! Go Tiffany! Then Sherry and Gina (both of the bellydance instructors here at True Harmony) guided people into the Seminar Room with their bellydancing! Such beauty and rhythm those girls have! We were privileged to play such big roles in this event that hosted so many people!

Phoenix Magazine, in the May 2009 issue page 113, highlights 5 of the top Valley nonprofit organizations. Number 3 is Free Arts of Arizona, this nonprofit organization "brings the healing power of the creative arts to abused, homeless, and at-risk children", serving more than 100 group homes, shelters, and residential treatment facilities throughout the Valley. The Center for True Harmony has partnered with Free Arts of Arizona and is hosting a Community Free Arts Day to benefit Free Arts of Arizona.

Daily Health Tips and Myths - Belly Dance: Be a Beautiful Woman

As I teach my many diverse students how to belly dance I hear them saying the same things over and over again. I like to come here so I can have some fun. I like to feel the music flow through me. I feel more beautiful when I can move my body in a fluid way that is only for my benefit. I like to bond with the other women. It’s funny because though my students are all women, they range from 16 years old AZ born and bred to 20 & 30 year old career oriented international to 40 something house wife and entrepreneurs.  It’s truly an honor to be able to lead a class of such impressionable ladies, teach them something new about how their bodies can move and send them off with a heightened sense of confidence, grace and control. We belly dance as a hobby. It’s fun. It benefits us emotionally, physically & mentally. We develop new circle of friends. We reconnect to being women in a class.
