Es”scent”ials for Pregnancy
By Marci Cagen, LMT, RMT, RN
Aromatherapy is a nurturing way to promote happiness and a sense of well being while easing some of the discomforts that pregnancy can bring. Although some precautions must be taken when choosing which oils to use, aromatherapy is a great way to bring ease and comfort during the pre-natal period.
Did you know that the essential oil expressed from ginger is an ideal way to alleviate nausea? You can inhale it straight from the lid of the bottle or add 1-2 drops to a tissue and breathe in slowly.
Tired, swollen feet and legs are a common complaint during pregnancy. A gentle massage using firm pressure up the legs and very light strokes coming back down towards the feet can relieve stress in the lower extremities. Backaches are especially common during pregnancy so an aromatherapy massage, especially in the lower back, can bring relief and ease tension. Rose, chamomile, sandalwood and lavender are wonderful, safe oils to use. Remember to always use a good base product like almond, safflower or jojoba oil to blend your essential oils in before applying directly to your skin.
For prevention and treatment of stretch marks, a blend of neroli and mandarin can be applied in a carrier oil like apricot. Both have strong cell-regenerating properties and bring a soothing and uplifting sense to the mind, body and spirit.
Because of the heightened sense of smell during pregnancy, only half of the usual amount of essential oils should be used. For example, only 3-4 drops in a bath or 4-5 in a diffuser. If applying during a massage, only 1-1 ½ % should be blended into the cream or oil that is being used.
Aromatherapy is a safe and effective way to enjoy all of the milestones during pregnancy.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - The details of what, why and how to treat.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is becoming increasingly prevalent. In very basic terms, PCOS is due to an imbalance of hormones associated with weight gain, increased acne or hair growth, and irregular or absence of menstrual periods due to lack of ovulation. The syndrome is diagnosed based on symptoms, ultrasound, and lab results.
Often, the patient’s ovaries will have a very specific look on ultrasound, showing multiple small follicles grouped around the perimeter of the ovary like “a string of pearls”. Lab results often show elevated glucose and insulin levels. If the endocrine system is not functioning properly, glucose cannot be properly absorbed and stored in the body, thus showing up as an excess in the patient’s blood. If the pancreas is working overtime to produce insulin, high levels of this hormone may appear in the blood as well. Chronic high levels of glucose and insulin lead to diabetes, and this can be a major concern and risk factor for developing other health problems like stroke or heart attack.
Another abnormal lab finding is elevated testosterone. Although considered “the male sex hormone”, it is normal in lower doses in the female patient. However, when the levels are higher than normal, the patient may experience facial hair, acne, mood swings and irregular periods. All of these hormones affect each other as well as impacting the “female hormones” that control the menstrual cycle (follicle stimulating hormone, leutenizing hormone, estrogen and progesterone). The absence of a menstrual period is due to lack of ovulation because of the disruption of the normal hormone flow and the unusual physical appearance of the ovary.
For many years, oral contraceptive pills have been the conventional treatment of choice for PCOS. Unfortunately, birth control pills only treat the symptoms and do little to treat the underlying issues. Studies have shown that for the most common type of PCOS, weight loss and dietary changes significantly reduce physical symptoms, help prevent pre-diabetes, help regulate menstrual cycles, and increase chances of pregnancy. This is the “First Line Therapy”.
Conventional fertility treatment for PCOS includes medication to induce ovulation. However, as with most medications, there are certain risks. Therefore, this is only done under close monitoring by your physician.
Alternative treatment options for PCOS include biphasic tinctures, acupuncture, herbal supplements and massage. These alternative treatments help treat the cause of the imbalances in the body, reducing stress and optimizing reproductive health.
Here at True harmony, we are fortunate to be able to offer alternative therapies as well as conventional. We have had great success in treating PCOS with our First Line Therapy program alone or combined with acupuncture and herbal supplements or tinctures. We are also able to offer supportive therapies to help reduce stress (massage, reflexology, and reiki therapy).

IUD and Pregnancy
(Some Frequently Asked Questions)
Can I still get pregnant with an IUD?
Yes, you can! No contraceptive method, including the intrauterine device (IUD) is 100% effective. It IS possible for a woman to become pregnant even though she has an IUD, though the risk is low.
What should I do if I find out I’m pregnant and have an IUD in place?
You should call your doctor, let them know the situation and make an appointment at your earliest convenience. If you are not experiencing vaginal bleeding or pain, it is not an “emergency”, but it is important that you are seen by your physician as soon as you can reasonably arrange an appointment.
What are the risks of IUD and pregnancy?
Risks include ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy occurring outside the uterus), miscarriage, infection and premature delivery. An ectopic pregnancy that goes undetected can rupture, causing internal bleeding and even death.
Should the IUD be removed?
There are conflicting theories regarding removal of IUD with pregnancy. Removing the IUD can cause miscarriage. However, there are risks for leaving the IUD in place as well. These risks include infection, miscarriage, premature delivery and other complications during pregnancy or delivery. This is a personal decision that you will be better prepared to make after having an in-depth consultation with your doctor.

How to Prevent Gestational Diabetes, Pre-Eclampsia, and Morning Sickness during Pregnancy
By Dr Denise Grobe ND at the Center for True Harmony Wellness & Medicine™ PC
Some studies suggest that the typical American diet and corresponding increased incidence of obesity is at least partly responsible for growing numbers of patients with these high risk medical conditions. Educating the public about the importance of diet and lifestyle, particularly during pregnancy, is a top priority, as well as being able to then provide them with the tools to be successful.
Here is some basic information on morning sickness, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.
Morning sickness – A miserable, terrible nuisance and occurs in 50% of all pregnancies. Severe cases may cause weight loss, dehydration, hypokalemia. No known adverse affects to baby. Theories claim morning sickness is due to changes in hormones. Research suggests that women who eat a diet higher is sugars, oils, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, and caffeine are more likely to develop morning sickness during pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes (GDM) – high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, during pregnancy there is an increased demand on insulin to manage blood sugar levels.
Common symptoms of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) - None. Usually diagnosed by general screening during pregnancy.
Complications if blood sugars are not well maintained
· Large babies – can complicate delivery, cause trauma to both baby and mother, increased incidence of c-sections
· Low blood sugars – babies have difficulty managing blood sugar levels after delivery
· Jaundice, polycythemia (high blood cell mass), low calcium and magnesium levels
· Interferes with lung maturation
· Increased association with pre-eclampsia
Women who have had GDM are at increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes at a later time.
Children of women who had GDM are at increased risk of childhood and adult obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and insulin resistance. This risk is most significant when blood sugars were not well managed during pregnancy.
Pre-eclampsia – Hypertension during pregnancy associated with high levels of protein in the urine pregnancy. The exact cause of pre-eclampsia is unknown but it is well accepted that pre-eclampsia arises from multiple factors. Diet is thought to be a major factor, especially relating to poor nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and obesity.
Signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia
· Rapid weight gain caused by a significant increase in bodily fluid
· Abdominal pain
· Severe headaches
· A change in reflexes
· Reduced output of urine or no urine
· Dizziness
Complications of Pre-eclampsia
· Lack of blood flow to the placenta can cause slow growth, low birth weight, preterm birth and breathing difficulties for your baby
· Increases your risk of placental abruption
· HELLP — Hemolysis (the destruction of red blood cells), elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count — syndrome can rapidly become life-threatening for both you and your baby.
· Eclampsia – Pre-eclampsia + Seizures, can permanently damage your vital organs, including your brain, liver and kidneys. Left untreated can cause coma, brain damage and death for both you and your baby.
Women who develop Pre-eclampsia have an increased risk for developing Cardiovascular Disease later in life.
Diet and lifestyle changes implemented before pregnancy or during early pregnancy can greatly reduce the risks of developing these pregnancy related conditions. Adopting a low-glycemic diet will manage blood sugar by limiting blood sugars levels to a narrow range and improving insulin response. A low glycemic diet consists of mostly whole foods, limits processed foods, which improves dietary intake of vitamins and minerals.
What is a Low-Glycemic Diet?
The Glycemic Index refers to the effect that a food has on blood sugar levels; foods with a high Glycemic Index (above 70) raise blood sugar levels significantly while foods with a low Glycemic Index (below 55) cause only a small increase in blood sugar levels. So, a diet consisting of low glycemic foods will keep blood sugar levels and insulin levels low and well stabilized.
Research has shown that people who adhere to a low glycemic diet have a decreased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.
It is important for women looking to have a healthy pregnancy, that have a history of or are at higher risk for morning sickness, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes to look to look at ways to alter their lifestyle to become healthier. There are many programs available that focus on low-glycemic meal planning, exercise, specialized supplementation and personalized support.

Questions about Postpartum Sex?
Are you unsure or anxious about what to expect in the bedroom after you have your baby? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! First and most importantly, most obstetricians recommend that you abstain from intercourse until after you have your 6 week postpartum checkup. There are a couple of reasons for this. Your body needs time to heal. Also, you need to discuss birth control with your provider before you start having sex again. If your provider determines that it is ok for you to resume and you have decided on a form of birth control, the next step is making sure you are ready.
Being ready for sex with a new baby is more than just a physical issue. You most likely will be exhausted and sleep deprived from your role as a new mom. It’s important that you talk openly with your partner about how you are feeling and together set some goals for intimacy and sex. Sometimes partners feel “left out” now that you are spending so much time and energy on the new baby. It is important that both partners feel appreciated and secure in the relationship. Make time for the “two of you” when baby is napping or sleeping. Start taking short “dates” while baby is home with a trusted relative or friend.
Start slowly and take time to be sure that you are appropriately stimulated and ready for sexual relations. You may find that your body has changed or responds differently and this can be normal for some women. Use a lubricant if you are having difficulty or experiencing discomfort with intercourse. If this persists, you may want to check back with your physician.
Also consider that it “doesn’t always have to be about sex”. Couples can do other things that promote intimacy. Try showering or bathing together. Candlelight dinners or just a bag of popcorn and a favorite movie can help you feel close. Remember too that touching, embracing and kissing are also important. Be open to impulsiveness, enjoy each other and remember that this is the basis of your family.
Be sure you continue to take your prenatal vitamins as your body needs extra support at this time, especially while you are breast feeding. Pay attention to your diet and avoid foods that are going to suck your energy. Exercise is important as well as it will give you that pick up you need to keep going when you feel you are at your wits end. Consider getting regular massages to support your immune system and work out those kinks from midnight feedings.
The happier you are, the happier your sex life will be. Don’t hesitate to contact a professional for advice.
