The future of healthcare!!
Americans have many complaints about our current healthcare system and are demanding a change in that system. One of the many complaints about healthcare is that there is NO healthcare there is only sick care. Americans are so concerned about their health; maintaining their health, regaining their health and the desire for medical treatments that do not carry the side effects of pharmaceuticals that the health supplements industry has become a multi billion dollar industry. The next time you are in a bookstore just peruse the health section and take note of the overflowing shelves of books offering alternative treatments and lifestyle adjustments for common illness.
It is amazing and empowering that Americans are actively pursuing the knowledge they desire. However, most of these books and resources are not written by Physicians and when a patient has questions or wants reassurances from their primary healthcare provider or specialist those questions cannot be answered or are met with criticism and frustration. Americans pay a lot of money for their healthcare and want to be provided with well rounded healthcare that addresses and answers all their health concerns.
The Center for True Harmony Wellness and Medicine provides well rounded healthcare that is capable of answering all patients’ questions regarding their health, wellness, and lifestyle. Dr. Christine Brass-Jones DO OB/GYN, Dr. Denise Q Grobe ND and MaryAnn Shostek PA-C of True Harmony utilize the Conventional Medical Model and the Naturopathic Medical Model of healthcare; the Doctors and practitioner work together to provide the most comprehensive care. As well as medical services, the Center for True Harmony also offers therapeutic massage, reflexology, cranial-sacral, Reiki, hypnotherapy, yoga and skin care to complete the full spectrum of healthcare services and needs.
So, how does it really work?
Here’s an example of how the Center for True Harmony’s women-medicine Physician Assistant, Mary Ann Shostek, works with patients who are having stress-related problems in an integrated medical approach. These stress-related problems could be any combination of fatigue, insomnia, PMS, hot flashes, mood changes, headaches, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, pelvic pain, chronic pain, and many more.
Physician Assistants are trained in the bio-psycho-social model of medicine. So, it is natural for me to consider my patients overall well being when seeing them for appointments. When performing a history and physical, one of my standard questions is "How is your stress level?" It’s not surprising that in many cases, the answer is "Terrible". There are so many stressors today: financial, loss of job, loss of home, family and relationship issues and so much more. My next questions is "What do you do for stress relief?" Again, it’s not surprising that in many cases, the answer is "Nothing". I then educate my patients about the effects of uncontrolled stress on the human body: sleeplessness, fatigue, digestive problems, and over long periods of time, high blood pressure, increased risk of stroke or heart problems and even infertility. That’s when it is really a bonus for me to be fortunate enough to be practicing at True Harmony. I am able to direct my patients into therapies that will help them control and reduce their stress levels, and thus help them to lead more healthy and productive lives. I urge my patients to find out what works best for them, and gently guide them into that path. Knowing and working side-by-side with the therapists at True Harmony is a great advantage and allows me to personalize recommendations for my patients. This may involve monthly massage, practicing weekly yoga, doing daily meditation, regular exercise, or meeting with a Reiki master. It is truly amazing and extremely fulfilling to see the positive changes from year to year when patients take my advice and start taking care of themselves.
"Two of the fundamental tenets of naturopathic medicine are to Treat the whole person and to find and treat the cause of the symptoms" says the Center for True Harmony’s women-medicine Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Denise Q Grobe.
I had a patients that had been experiencing pelvic pain for several months. She had an ovarian cyst in the past that had caused a similar pain, so she thought she was suffering from another ovarian cyst. She had a normal pelvic ultrasound. During a detailed physical exam I was able to cause the same pain when I pressed on her psoas muscle. Based on that finding I recommended that the patient have a therapeutic massage. The pain was relieved by the massage along with focused stretching; the patient continues to be pain free.
